NAD+ and cellular energy: what it actually does

NAD+ and cellular energy: what it actually does

NAD+ sounds like a supplement-aisle buzzword until you learn that every single cell in your body literally cannot make energy without it. Here's the honest picture of what it is, what it does, and what the research does — and doesn't — support.

What NAD+ actually is

NAD+ stands for nicotinamide adenine dinucleotide. It's a coenzyme — a helper molecule your cells use to convert food into ATP (your cellular energy currency), and to run critical repair and signaling processes. Every mitochondrion in every cell relies on it. Without NAD+, your cells literally cannot generate energy efficiently.

Did you know?

It declines with age

Published research has shown NAD+ levels decline meaningfully with age across many tissues. By age 50, intracellular NAD+ can be roughly half of what it was in young adulthood — a decline associated with reduced mitochondrial function and other markers of cellular aging.

What it does in your cells

  • Energy production — critical for converting food into ATP
  • DNA repair — co-factor for enzymes that repair damaged DNA
  • Sirtuin activation — regulates proteins involved in longevity pathways
  • Metabolic signaling — part of the communication network between cells

NAD+ supports the same pathways responsible for cellular repair — which is why it's often framed as "cellular energy" support.

Where the research is strong — and where it isn't

A lot of research supports the decline of NAD+ with age and its critical role in cell function. Research on restoring NAD+ levels (via precursors or direct administration) is active, promising, and still evolving. Don't trust anyone claiming NAD+ does everything from whitening teeth to curing jet lag — the science is narrower and more interesting than the hype.

“NAD+ is one of the most important molecules in your body. That doesn't make it magic.”
