On Slowing Down When Everyone Expects You to Speed Up

Y'all, there's something about September in Nashville. The air finally shifts. The mornings get a little crisp, the light turns that golden color that makes everything look softer... and for the first time in a long time, I'm not trying to outrun it.

If you know me, you know I don't do slow. I run a company, I host a podcast, I'm raising two kids who need me in ten different directions before 8 a.m. My whole life I've treated rest like it was something I had to earn. Like I had to bleed for it first.

But this year my body sat me down and had a talk with me. The endometriosis flares. The exhaustion that no amount of coffee could touch. The mornings I'd wake up already tired. I kept pushing through it because that's what I do — I push. Then one day I just... couldn't.

Slow mornings on the porch. This is the version of me I'm learning to protect.

Grace over grinding

I've talked openly about the weight I gained, about my hormones being all over the place, about the days I didn't recognize myself in the mirror. And what I've realized is that healing doesn't come from punishing yourself harder. It comes from being gentle with the body that's been carrying you through everything.

For me, part of that has been getting real support instead of white-knuckling it. My B12 has honestly been a small thing that made a big difference in my energy this fall — I'm not dragging by 2 p.m. anymore. And I've leaned into the tools that actually help my body work with me instead of against me. Slowing down doesn't mean giving up. Sometimes it means finally giving yourself what you needed all along.

“You are not a machine. You're a woman with a body that keeps score, and rest is not the reward — it's the medicine.”
— Savannah

I think a lot of us — especially women, especially the ones who hold everyone else together — believe that if we stop, everything falls apart. Chloe needs homework help. Grayson's got a hundred questions. The business needs me. My family needs me. And somewhere in all of that, I disappeared from my own list.

So this season, I'm doing things differently. Little things. Big things. Here's what slowing down actually looks like for me right now:

  • Saying no without a paragraph-long excuse attached to it
  • Morning coffee on the porch before I touch my phone
  • Therapy every week, no matter how 'fine' I feel
  • Cooking dinner with the kids instead of ordering it in a rush
  • Letting myself be tired without turning it into guilt

None of it is glamorous. But it's real. And it's mine. I chose grace this year, over the grind, over the pressure, over the version of me that thought worth had to be earned through exhaustion.

Note

A little note

If you're reading this feeling like you can't possibly slow down... start with one thing. One boundary. One quiet morning. That's not weakness, honey. That's the beginning of coming home to yourself.

Fall has always felt like a fresh start to me — more than January ever has. So if you need a sign to stop sprinting and start breathing, let this be it. You don't have to fall apart to deserve rest. You just have to decide you're worth taking care of. And you are. You so are.

With love, Savannah
