Reading a prescription label: the 101 guide

Your prescription label is the most important document that comes with your medication. Most people don't read it closely — and they miss real information about what they're taking.

What to check every time

  • Your name — confirm it's right before you take anything
  • Medication name — matches what your provider prescribed
  • Dose and concentration — especially important for injectables
  • Administration instructions — how, when, how often
  • Storage requirements — refrigerated? room temp?
  • Pharmacy contact info — so you can call if something looks off
  • Expiration date
