The patch releases a steady dose of bioidentical estradiol (the same molecule your ovaries used to make) through your skin and into the bloodstream. Because it bypasses the liver, transdermal estradiol has a different — and generally more favorable — clotting and stroke-risk profile than oral estrogen, especially for women over 50 or with cardiovascular risk factors. Your provider determines whether the patch is appropriate based on your full medical history.

Most patches are changed twice a week — typically Sunday and Wednesday, or on a schedule your provider sets. You apply it to clean, dry skin on the lower abdomen or upper buttock, rotate sites to avoid skin irritation, and you can shower, swim, and exercise with it on.

If you still have your uterus, yes — estrogen alone increases the risk of endometrial (uterine lining) cancer. Your provider will pair your patch with oral micronized progesterone (or another progestogen) to keep that lining safe. If you’ve had a hysterectomy, progesterone usually isn’t needed. This decision is always made by your prescribing provider.

Many women notice fewer hot flashes and night sweats within the first 2–4 weeks. Sleep often improves by week 4–6, mood and brain fog by week 8–12, and full benefit by 3–6 months as your dose is dialed in. Results vary; your provider may adjust your dose along the way.
