Thyroid basics every woman should know before 40

Thyroid basics every woman should know before 40

Your thyroid is a small gland with a big job: it sets your metabolism's baseline pace. When it's off, everything feels off — energy, temperature, sleep, weight, mood. Women are 5–8x more likely than men to develop a thyroid condition, and many cases go undiagnosed for years.

The basic panel to ask about

  • TSH — the screening test most providers start with
  • Free T4 — the storage form of thyroid hormone
  • Free T3 — the active form your cells actually use
  • Thyroid antibodies — flags autoimmune conditions like Hashimoto's

Note

A normal TSH doesn't mean "nothing's wrong"

TSH is a screening tool, not a full picture. If you have symptoms (fatigue, cold intolerance, hair thinning, weight changes) and a "normal" TSH, ask for a full panel — including Free T3 and antibodies.
“A good provider runs the whole panel and listens to the whole patient.”
— Nicole S.
